What's Happening?
The Company Lab (CO.LAB) in Chattanooga has launched its inaugural CO.LAB Q commercialization studio, a 12-month program designed to bridge the gap between technical proof-of-concept and enterprise deployment for quantum startups. Commencing in November
2026, four selected companies—RidgeQuantum, Superquantum, esoteriq, and Kottackal Business Solutions—will follow structured commercialization roadmaps. These startups will connect with regional quantum testbeds, technical partners, and prospective customers across the Tennessee Valley. The program is supported by founding partners including EPB, Quantinuum, Davidson Technologies, The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC), Middle Tennessee Electric, Quantum Machines, and Classiq, with research collaboration from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Each venture will undergo a commercialization readiness assessment and periodic reviews with dedicated advisory boards.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is crucial for accelerating the practical application and commercialization of quantum technologies in the U.S. By providing structured support and access to concentrated quantum infrastructure, CO.LAB Q aims to overcome operational bottlenecks in the quantum stack. The selected companies are addressing diverse areas, from continuous-variable Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) for critical infrastructure security (RidgeQuantum) to fault-tolerant compilation and orchestration (Superquantum), quantum data encoding (esoteriq), and quantum sensing for infrastructure intelligence (Kottackal). The program leverages Chattanooga's unique quantum assets, including the EPB Quantum Center's IonQ Forte Enterprise trapped-ion system and municipal quantum communications network. This focused effort can drive innovation, create new market opportunities, and establish Chattanooga as a significant hub in the emerging quantum industry, potentially impacting sectors like energy, telecommunications, and cybersecurity.
What's Next?
The four selected startups will proceed through their 12-month commercialization roadmaps, focusing on achieving structured commercial milestones. This will involve validating their technologies over existing infrastructure, benchmarking their tools, and conducting field evaluations with regional utility and energy operators. The ongoing collaboration with founding partners and Oak Ridge National Laboratory will provide critical technical and market insights. The success of this inaugural cohort will likely influence future iterations of the CO.LAB Q program and could attract further investment and talent to the Chattanooga quantum ecosystem. Continued progress in these areas will be essential for demonstrating the economic viability and scalability of quantum technologies beyond initial technical feasibility.
Beyond the Headlines
The CO.LAB Q studio represents a strategic effort to translate cutting-edge quantum research into tangible commercial products and services. This model of regional innovation, combining academic research, corporate partnerships, and startup acceleration, is vital for the U.S. to maintain its competitive edge in advanced technologies. The focus on practical applications, such as securing critical infrastructure and optimizing power grids, underscores the immediate relevance of quantum advancements. However, the broader challenge remains in scaling these nascent technologies and integrating them into existing complex systems. The lessons learned from this program, particularly regarding the economic viability and deployment challenges of quantum solutions, will be critical for shaping national quantum strategies and fostering a robust quantum industry.
