What's Happening?
The South Dakota Trust Company Foundation has been recognized as the 2026 Friend of the Foundation by the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. This annual award celebrates entities whose generosity and commitment have significantly shaped Sioux Falls.
Matt Tobin and Pierce McDowell III, key figures at the South Dakota Trust Company, were instrumental in establishing the foundation. They consistently encouraged clients to invest in South Dakota's future, leading to millions of dollars in charitable giving to the state. Mary Kolsrud, chief philanthropy officer for the Community Foundation, highlighted that many of these donors are from outside South Dakota, bringing new charitable dollars into the region. The South Dakota Trust Company Foundation manages both a Donor Advised Fund and an endowment, which have collectively distributed over $2 million through the Donor Advised Fund and hold approximately $2 million in the endowment.
Why It's Important?
This recognition underscores the significant role that corporate philanthropy plays in community development and well-being. The South Dakota Trust Company Foundation's model of inspiring clients, many of whom are not local, to contribute to South Dakota causes demonstrates an innovative approach to fundraising and community engagement. This influx of external charitable dollars provides crucial support for local nonprofits, such as the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House and the State Theatre, enabling them to sustain operations and expand services. The dual approach of immediate giving through a Donor Advised Fund and long-term investment via an endowment ensures both current needs are met and future community resilience is built. This model could serve as an example for other businesses looking to integrate philanthropy into their corporate culture and client relationships.
What's Next?
The South Dakota Trust Company Foundation is expected to continue its philanthropic efforts, leveraging its established funds to support various community initiatives in Sioux Falls and across the state. The ongoing partnership with the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation will likely facilitate further growth and strategic allocation of charitable resources. This recognition may also inspire other businesses and wealth advisors in the region to adopt similar philanthropic models, potentially leading to a broader culture of giving within the South Dakota business community. Nonprofits that have benefited from the foundation's consistent support can anticipate continued funding, allowing for more stable long-term planning and program development.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate impact of financial contributions, the South Dakota Trust Company Foundation's approach fosters a deeper sense of community and civic responsibility among its clients and employees. By encouraging clients to invest in South Dakota, the foundation not only generates funds but also builds connections between individuals and the state's needs, potentially creating new advocates and supporters. This model highlights the power of integrating philanthropic conversations into professional services, transforming routine business interactions into opportunities for social good. Furthermore, the emphasis on both immediate and endowed giving reflects a sophisticated understanding of sustainable philanthropy, addressing present challenges while securing resources for future generations. This long-term vision contributes to building a more resilient and vibrant community.
