What's Happening?
Deaf Crocodile, in association with Seagull Films, has released a 4K restored version of the Soviet fantasy film 'Scarlet Sails' on U.S. Blu-ray. This marks the film's first-ever U.S. Blu-ray release. Directed by Aleksandr Ptushko, the film is an adaptation
of Alexander Grin's novel and tells two parallel stories: one about Assol, the daughter of an impoverished sailor who dreams of a white ship with scarlet sails, and the other about Arthur, a rebellious aristocrat's son who yearns for a life at sea. The restoration was carried out by Mosfilm from the original 35mm picture elements. The Blu-ray features a DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio mono track in original Russian with optional English subtitles, and includes special features such as an audio commentary by author and film historian Rich Johnson, a visual essay by Celeste de la Cabra, and a conversation with Tim Lucas and Stephen R. Bissette.
Why It's Important?

Aleksandr Ptushko is recognized as a master of Soviet fantasy, and this restoration makes one of his 'often-overlooked gems' accessible to a wider American audience. The 4K restoration ensures that the film's visual artistry, including its lyrical homage to the ocean and unique cinematography, is preserved and presented in high quality. It also highlights the ongoing efforts to restore and preserve historical films for future generations.
