What's Happening?
New research from Precisely, a leader in unified data management, and the Americas SAP Users Group (ASUG) indicates that while SAP S/4HANA modernization is accelerating, significant challenges persist, particularly concerning AI adoption. The study, 'Advancing
Automation, AI, and Process Transformation in SAP: 2027 Trends and Challenges,' highlights that 67% of organizations are fully or partially migrated to SAP S/4HANA, an increase from 59% in 2025. However, 53% cite handling SAP ECC customizations as a primary migration hurdle, and 83% emphasize the importance of SAP master data cleansing. The research also shows growing interest in AI-enabled automation, with Microsoft Copilot (60%) being the most used AI interface alongside SAP ERP processes, followed by ChatGPT (27%) and SAP Joule (26%). Despite this, only 3% of organizations report fully automated, AI-driven processes, with 46% using AI across automated and human-assisted tasks. More than half (51%) are in the early stages of exploring AI-assisted development.
Why It's Important?
This research underscores the complex landscape U.S. businesses face in integrating advanced technologies like AI and modernizing their SAP systems. The challenges in untangling legacy processes, customizations, and ensuring data quality can significantly impact operational efficiency and the return on investment for these transformations. The slow pace of fully autonomous AI adoption, despite high interest, suggests that organizations are still grappling with how to effectively leverage AI beyond augmentation. This could lead to a competitive disadvantage for companies unable to streamline their data and processes, potentially affecting their ability to innovate and respond to market demands. The emphasis on human oversight and the early stages of AI-assisted development indicate a cautious approach, which, while prudent, may delay the full benefits of AI for many enterprises.
What's Next?
As the 2027 SAP ECC end-of-maintenance deadline approaches, organizations are expected to intensify their SAP S/4HANA migration efforts. The focus will likely shift towards addressing legacy complexity and data quality issues, which are critical for successful modernization and effective AI integration. Companies will need to invest further in robust data management solutions and governance frameworks to ensure AI-ready data. Furthermore, the trend towards more flexible, best-of-breed automation approaches, with 33% of organizations adopting this strategy, suggests a move away from monolithic solutions. This will necessitate careful integration strategies and potentially increased reliance on no-code/low-code capabilities, which 84% of organizations consider important. The continued exploration of AI-assisted development will also likely lead to more defined strategies for scaling AI across various business functions.
Beyond the Headlines
The findings reveal a deeper implication: the success of AI adoption is not merely about implementing technology but about fundamentally rethinking business processes and data foundations. The report highlights that 'trusted AI starts with trusted data,' suggesting that without clean, governed, and AI-ready data, the potential of AI remains largely untapped. This points to a broader organizational challenge where technological advancements must be met with corresponding improvements in data infrastructure and strategic planning. The human element also remains crucial, with AI primarily augmenting human activity rather than replacing it. This suggests that future success will depend on how well organizations can integrate AI tools into existing workflows while empowering their workforce with the skills and processes to effectively utilize these new capabilities, ensuring human oversight and ethical considerations are maintained.
