What's Happening?
The Port of Cleveland and Milo Harbour Inc. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a new cross-lake truck ferry service between Northeast Ohio and Southern Ontario. This service, expected to launch in early 2028, aims to create a direct
maritime connection across Lake Erie. The initiative is designed to provide manufacturers, shippers, trucking companies, and logistics partners with a reliable alternative to the congested land routes, particularly the Windsor-Detroit gateway. The proposed service will accommodate up to 300 round-trip truckloads per day, offering a new transportation corridor for cargo moving between Canada and the United States. The ferry service will reduce the current over-the-road truck transit times, with an estimated one-way transit time of two to three hours for the 55-mile cross-lake trip.

This development is significant as it addresses the growing challenges faced by cargo networks, including driver shortages, increasing border congestion, and aging transportation infrastructure. By providing a maritime alternative, the project aims to improve supply-chain resilience and reduce dependence on congested highway and rail networks. The project partners are currently engaged in planning and stakeholder engagement to evaluate infrastructure requirements, regulatory approvals, and operational planning. Future investments will focus on customs and border-processing facilities, cargo terminal improvements, and marine handling infrastructure. The Port of Cleveland is leveraging funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Ports Program to procure electric cargo-handling equipment, further advancing cleaner port operations. The service is expected to complement existing transportation networks, strengthening the Port of Cleveland's role as a strategic logistics hub.
