What's Happening?
GTT has received an order from Samsung Heavy Industries for the tank design of Delfin FLNG 1, a floating liquefied natural gas unit to be constructed for the Delfin LNG project. This unit will be the first of its kind to enter service in the United States
and is expected to be the largest in the world in terms of production capacity, with an output of 4.4 million tonnes of LNG per year. GTT will design the cryogenic tanks, which will have a total storage capacity of 180,000 m³, using their Mark III Flex membrane containment system. This system is designed to withstand demanding maritime and offshore conditions, including hurricane exposure. Delfin FLNG 1 is scheduled for delivery in mid-2030 and will operate off the coast of Louisiana.
Why It's Important?
The order for Delfin FLNG 1 represents a significant advancement in the U.S. LNG sector, marking the entry of floating LNG units into the market. This project is poised to enhance the U.S.'s LNG production capacity, contributing to global energy supply. The use of advanced membrane technologies by GTT highlights the industry's focus on safety, reliability, and performance in challenging environments. The development of such large-scale LNG infrastructure is crucial for meeting increasing global energy demands and demonstrates the U.S.'s commitment to expanding its role in the global LNG market. This project could set a precedent for future offshore LNG developments in the region.
