A study conducted by researchers at Flinders University, published in the journal Nutrients, indicates that high coffee consumption may be associated with reduced bone mineral density (BMD) in older, postmenopausal women. The study analyzed the coffee and
tea consumption habits of 9,704 women aged 65 and older over a decade. During this period, researchers measured BMD at the femoral neck and hip, common sites for osteoporosis-related fractures. The findings revealed that consuming more than five cups of coffee daily was linked to lower BMD, while moderate coffee intake (two to three cups per day) showed no negative effects. Conversely, tea consumption was associated with higher total hip BMD. The study also noted that coffee's negative association with femoral neck BMD was more pronounced in women with higher alcohol intake, and tea's positive effect on bone density was stronger in women with obesity.
