What's Happening?
The National Hockey League (NHL) and Kaufland have announced a new multiyear international partnership, designating Kaufland as the presenting sponsor of the NHL Global Series Germany and the Official Grocery Retail Partner of the NHL in Germany, Czech
Republic, and Slovakia. This collaboration will integrate the Kaufland brand across various NHL platforms, including in-arena assets, digitally enhanced dasherboards, and virtual slot in-ice ads during European NHL game broadcasts, including the new NHL Monday Night Hockey. Kaufland will also implement a comprehensive retail activation program in the three countries, featuring in-store and digital fan experiences, opportunities to win official NHL prizes, and appearances by the Stanley Cup. The partnership aims to increase youth participation in hockey through grassroots events and fan engagement activities. The 2026 NHL Global Series Germany, presented by Kaufland, will feature two regular-season games between the Ottawa Senators and Chicago Blackhawks in Düsseldorf on December 18 and December 20, 2026.
Why It's Important?
This partnership signifies a strategic expansion of the NHL's global footprint, particularly in key European markets. By aligning with Kaufland, a major grocery retailer, the NHL gains extensive reach and direct engagement with consumers in Germany, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. This collaboration is crucial for growing the sport's popularity and fan base outside North America, leveraging Kaufland's retail presence for promotional campaigns and fan experiences. The NHL Global Series Germany, featuring regular-season games, directly exposes European audiences to top-tier hockey, fostering deeper connections with the league. Furthermore, the commitment to youth participation through grassroots programs is vital for long-term growth, aiming to cultivate a new generation of players and fans in these regions. This initiative underscores the NHL's broader strategy to internationalize the sport and enhance its global brand presence.
What's Next?
The partnership will officially kick off with the 2026 NHL Global Series Germany in December, featuring the Ottawa Senators and Chicago Blackhawks. Leading up to this, Kaufland will activate its retail and digital promotional campaigns across Germany, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Fans can expect various in-store promotions, digital contests, and opportunities to engage with the NHL brand. The NHL will continue to expand its grassroots programs, school-based initiatives, and youth development activities in these regions, supported by Kaufland. The introduction of NHL Monday Night Hockey broadcasts in Europe will also provide regular prime-time viewing opportunities for fans. This multiyear agreement suggests sustained efforts to integrate hockey into the local sports culture and build a lasting legacy for the sport in these European markets.
Beyond the Headlines
This partnership reflects a growing trend of major North American sports leagues seeking to expand their international appeal through strategic collaborations with local brands. For the NHL, it's not just about broadcasting games but about embedding the sport within the cultural fabric of target countries through community engagement and youth development. The choice of a grocery retailer like Kaufland highlights a strategy to reach everyday consumers directly, integrating the sport into daily life rather than just sports-specific channels. This approach could serve as a model for other leagues looking to globalize their brand. Furthermore, the emphasis on grassroots hockey development indicates a long-term vision, aiming to create sustainable fan bases and talent pipelines, which could eventually lead to more European players in the NHL and further globalize the league's talent pool.
