SmartSense by Digi has released its Cargo Theft Report, based on a survey of 150 U.S.-based loss and organized retail crime (ORC) prevention leaders. The report indicates a significant increase in the sophistication and organization of cargo theft tactics.
According to the findings, 81% of respondents believe cargo theft has become more organized in recent years, and 79% express greater concern about it now than ever before. The survey highlights that 63% of businesses have experienced an increase in cargo theft incidents compared to the previous year, and 81% view organized retail crime as a growing concern. The financial impact is substantial, with 80% reporting lost sales due to cargo theft, and 40% incurring annual losses of at least $1 million, while 28% face losses exceeding $2 million. Top concerns among respondents include fraudulent pickups and carrier impersonation (78%), GPS jamming and spoofing (71%), trailer theft (66%), and double brokering (64%).

The report also highlights the need for improved coordination and response, as only 37% of respondents regularly report incidents and collaborate with law enforcement. Moving forward, increased cooperation between businesses and law enforcement, coupled with advanced technological solutions, will be crucial to effectively mitigate cargo theft and its widespread impact.
