What's Happening?
The Seoul Metropolitan Government is organizing a nighttime trekking event called 'Twinkle Twinkle Night Walk' on October 21 and November 21. This event aims to illuminate Namsan Mountain with 700 LED lights worn by participants, creating a unique visual
spectacle. Each day will feature two rounds, from 7 PM to 9 PM, with 700 spots available per round, totaling 1,400 participants daily. The non-competitive program encourages participants to enjoy the autumn atmosphere and city night views at their own pace. The 3-kilometer course begins at Namsangol Hanok Village's Cheonwugak Pavilion, proceeds through Jamdubong Photo Island, and concludes at Namsan Palgakjeong Pavilion. On-site registration will be available starting at 6 PM on the event days at Namsangol Hanok Village, operating on a first-come, first-served basis. This initiative also includes a collaboration with Jung-gu to promote local commercial areas through a 'Companionship Night Market' in Shin Jungang Market, encouraging participants to visit nearby businesses.
Why It's Important?
This event is significant as it promotes physical activity and offers a novel way for citizens and tourists to experience Seoul's urban landscape. By transforming familiar spaces into refreshing venues for sports and leisure, the Seoul Metropolitan Government aims to foster a habit of daily exercise through walking. The 'Twinkle Twinkle Night Walk' also serves as a cultural and recreational attraction, enhancing the city's appeal during the autumn season. The collaboration with Jung-gu and the 'Companionship Night Market' highlights an effort to boost the local nighttime economy, providing a direct benefit to neighborhood commercial areas. This integrated approach combines public health initiatives with economic development, creating a synergistic effect that benefits both residents and local businesses. The event's unique visual element, with participants wearing LED lights, is expected to draw considerable attention and create memorable experiences.
What's Next?
Following the successful execution of the October and November events, the Seoul Metropolitan Government may evaluate the public's reception and participation rates to consider future iterations or similar nighttime recreational programs. The collaboration with local districts like Jung-gu could serve as a model for future partnerships aimed at integrating public events with local economic promotion. Depending on the feedback, there might be expansions in the number of participants, additional dates, or variations in the trekking routes. Local businesses in the Shin Jungang Market and surrounding areas will likely monitor the economic impact of the 'Companionship Night Market' to assess the effectiveness of such promotional activities. The event could also inspire other cities to adopt similar initiatives that blend physical activity with unique urban experiences and local economic support.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond its immediate recreational and economic benefits, the 'Twinkle Twinkle Night Walk' reflects a broader trend in urban planning to repurpose and revitalize city spaces for diverse community engagement. By encouraging citizens to engage with nature within an urban setting at night, the event subtly promotes well-being and a sense of community. The visual spectacle of hundreds of lights moving through Namsan also taps into the aesthetic appeal of urban light installations, contributing to Seoul's identity as a dynamic and innovative city. This initiative could also be seen as part of a larger strategy to enhance Seoul's 'night tourism' offerings, providing unique experiences that extend beyond traditional daytime attractions. Such events can foster a deeper appreciation for urban green spaces and encourage residents to explore their city in new and engaging ways, potentially leading to increased civic pride and participation in local events.
