What's Happening?
Damen Shipyards Group has signed a contract with Seaspan ULC for the delivery of two ASD Tugs 2813. The agreement was finalized at the International Tug and Salvage Convention in Gothenburg, Sweden. These tugs will be the first Damen Tugs to join the Seaspan fleet,
although the two companies have a history of collaboration, including the delivery of hybrid-LNG ferries in 2021. The tugs will operate under the HaiSea Marine partnership, a joint venture between Seaspan and the Haisla Nation in British Columbia.
Why It's Important?
This contract highlights the ongoing collaboration between Damen and Seaspan, emphasizing their shared commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation in maritime technology. The introduction of these tugs will enhance Seaspan's operational capabilities, particularly in the Kitimat region. The partnership with the Haisla Nation also underscores the importance of involving indigenous communities in economic development projects. This deal could set a precedent for future collaborations in the maritime industry, promoting sustainable practices and technological advancements.
What's Next?
The construction of the tugs will take place at Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam, with delivery expected in the fourth quarter of next year. Following delivery, the tugs will benefit from Damen's local presence in British Columbia, ensuring rapid response and support. The successful implementation of this project could lead to further contracts and collaborations between Damen and Seaspan, as well as other maritime operators seeking to enhance their fleets with advanced, environmentally friendly vessels.
