Indiana-based biotech company BiomEdit has acquired Folium Science Technology, a move that significantly expands BiomEdit's animal health portfolio. The acquisition brings Folium's technical capabilities, including its Guided Biotics CRISPR-Cas technology,
and a feed additive, BiomElix One, which is already approved for the Brazilian market. BiomEdit, founded in 2022, specializes in using fermentation and gene-editing to develop genetically engineered bacterial biologics for animal disease treatment. Its initial product, BE-101, targets necrotic enteritis in broiler chickens. Folium's CRISPR-Cas technology allows for precise targeting of specific bacteria in a microbiome, complementing BiomEdit's existing technologies. BiomElix One, a non-pathogenic E. coli strain with a CRISPR payload designed to eliminate key salmonella genes, had already received regulatory approval from Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) and was in the final stages of formulation. Several key Folium team members will remain as advisors to facilitate the integration of the CRISPR-Cas platform.

BiomEdit is also on track to receive U.S. conditional licensure for BE-101 this quarter, with final approval anticipated soon. Following licensure, BiomEdit will initiate its Series C funding round to finance the commercialization of these two products. The company is actively moving all projects into in-vivo testing, including turkey studies to investigate the role of toxins in gangrenous dermatitis, with the potential to treat a million Thanksgiving turkeys with a BiomEdit product before the holiday. The acquisition of Folium Science was described as opportunistic and did not materially alter BiomEdit's cash or capital trajectory, indicating a strong financial position for future growth and commercialization efforts.
