What's Happening?
AMC Theatres is collaborating with horror-metal band Ice Nine Kills to present 'Welcome to Horrorwood,' a month-long film series bringing five genre-defining horror movies back to approximately 300 AMC locations across the United States this October.
The event, part of AMC’s Thrills & Chills programming and in partnership with Bloody Disgusting, is inspired by Ice Nine Kills’ albums 'The Silver Scream' and 'The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood.' The featured films include 'Hostel,' 'Friday the 13th,' 'American Psycho,' 'Pet Sematary,' and 'The Crow.' Each screening will include a specially recorded introduction from Ice Nine Kills frontman Spencer Charnas and a corresponding music video from the band after the film. Screenings will take place on Fridays and Tuesdays throughout October, with a special Halloween weekend showing of 'The Crow.'
Why It's Important?
This collaboration between AMC Theatres and Ice Nine Kills represents an innovative strategy to attract diverse audiences back to movie theaters, particularly during the Halloween season. By combining the appeal of classic horror films with the dedicated fanbase of a popular metal band, AMC is tapping into a niche market that might not typically frequent cinemas for re-releases. This initiative could boost ticket sales and concession revenue for AMC, demonstrating a creative approach to programming beyond new releases. For Ice Nine Kills, it further solidifies their brand's connection to the horror genre and expands their reach to a broader audience. The event also highlights the growing trend of experiential cinema, where screenings are enhanced with exclusive content and themed elements, providing added value for moviegoers and fostering a sense of community among fans.
What's Next?
Tickets for the 'Welcome to Horrorwood' series are currently on sale through AMC Theatres’ website and mobile app. The screenings will commence in October, with specific dates for each film. The success of this event could pave the way for similar collaborations between AMC Theatres and other musical artists or cultural figures, especially those with strong thematic ties to specific film genres. If the series proves popular, it might encourage AMC to explore more curated film events that blend cinema with other forms of entertainment, potentially leading to new revenue streams and enhanced customer engagement. The partnership also serves as a case study for how traditional cinema chains can adapt and innovate in a competitive entertainment landscape by offering unique, fan-centric experiences.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Welcome to Horrorwood' series reflects a broader cultural convergence between music and film, particularly within the horror genre. Ice Nine Kills has built its identity around horror-inspired storytelling, making this partnership a natural extension of their artistic brand. This type of cross-promotional event can create a synergistic effect, where fans of one medium are introduced to the other, fostering new audiences for both the band and the films. It also underscores the enduring appeal of classic horror cinema and its ability to draw audiences even decades after initial release, especially when presented with a fresh, engaging twist. The event taps into nostalgia while simultaneously offering a contemporary, interactive experience, demonstrating how cultural institutions can remain relevant by embracing interdisciplinary collaborations and catering to specific fan communities.
