What's Happening?
A Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project is set to advance cryopreservation technologies to develop a seed banking product for aquaculture species. This initiative aims to address the lack of genetic banking for embryos and larvae in the aquaculture industry,
which currently faces risks of genetic loss due to disease outbreaks or environmental catastrophes. The project focuses on the Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, utilizing recent advancements in rapid cooling and ultra-rapid rewarming techniques. These methods are expected to enhance the cryopreservation process, allowing for the conservation of important genetic strains and ensuring food security by preventing interruptions in supply.

The development of cryopreservation technologies for aquaculture is crucial for maintaining genetic diversity and stability in the industry. By enabling the long-term storage of genetic material, this project could protect against catastrophic losses and support sustainable aquaculture practices. The ability to 'cryobank' genetic material ensures that selective breeding programs can continue without the risk of losing valuable genetic lines. What's Next?
The project will initially focus on optimizing protocols for cryoprotective agent loading, vitrification, and ultra-rapid warming. Once these techniques are proven effective, the project aims to scale up the process to cryopreserve over 10,000 samples per day. This scalability is essential for widespread adoption in the aquaculture industry, allowing facilities to maintain large reserves of genetic material. The success of this project could lead to broader applications in other areas of agriculture and conservation, potentially transforming genetic banking practices across various sectors.
