What's Happening?
A team of Cuban athletes, led by Hella Eskenazi, faced significant travel challenges to participate in the Maccabiah Games in Israel. The journey involved traveling through five countries over more than four days due to the complexities of leaving Cuba and
the cancellation of flights by Air France. The Cuban delegation, consisting of 52 athletes, had to navigate various visa requirements and travel restrictions. Despite these hurdles, the team successfully reached Israel, where they have been competing in various sports, including softball, futsal, and basketball. Eskenazi, who is also the vice president of the Patronato de la Casa de la Comunidad Hebrea de Cuba, expressed the emotional significance of the trip, highlighting the opportunity to connect with Jewish communities from around the world.
Why It's Important?
The participation of Cuban athletes in the Maccabiah Games underscores the resilience and determination of individuals from countries with limited resources and complex political landscapes. This event provides a platform for cultural exchange and international camaraderie, fostering a sense of unity among Jewish communities globally. The challenges faced by the Cuban delegation highlight the broader issues of travel restrictions and economic limitations that affect many nations. Their successful participation not only brings attention to these challenges but also celebrates the spirit of sportsmanship and cultural connection.

Following the conclusion of the Maccabiah Games, the Cuban delegation will face the logistical challenge of returning home. The team plans to split into smaller groups, with some traveling through Paris and Panama, while others will go through Madrid directly to Havana.
