What's Happening?
Ethereum (ETH) is experiencing its worst October performance since 2018, with its price dropping by 13.6% this month. This decline is attributed to a combination of factors, including substantial outflows from US spot Ethereum ETFs and significant movements
of ETH from wallets that have been dormant for years. US spot Ethereum ETFs recorded net outflows on 17 of October's 20 trading days through October 28, totaling approximately $1.35 billion. This figure represents the second-largest monthly outflow on record, nearing the $1.42 billion seen in November 2025. Concurrently, on-chain analytics platforms have identified over 10 large transfers, totaling about 56,000 ETH (over $140 million), from long-idle wallets between October 5 and 29. Many of these transfers, including the largest one of 13,330 ETH, were sent to exchanges like Coinbase and Kraken, suggesting potential selling activity.
Why It's Important?
The current trend in Ethereum's price and market dynamics highlights a critical period for the cryptocurrency. The substantial outflows from US spot Ethereum ETFs indicate a waning investor confidence or a shift in investment strategies among institutional and retail investors. This sustained selling pressure from ETFs, coupled with the movement of large amounts of ETH from 'whale' wallets, suggests that both new and old money are exiting the market. The movement of ETH to exchanges typically precedes selling, which could further depress prices. This situation could lead to increased volatility and uncertainty in the broader cryptocurrency market, potentially influencing other digital assets. The psychological level of $2,000 is being closely watched by analysts, as a drop below this point could trigger further sell-offs and impact market sentiment.
What's Next?
Analysts are closely monitoring key support levels for Ethereum as it navigates this challenging period. Ted Pillows suggests that reclaiming $2,400 would be the first major sign of strength, while others believe that ETH needs to stay above $2,522 to avoid further downside. A break below $2,295 could signal another leg down, with potential support levels ranging from $2,207 to $1,725. Traders will be watching for any slowdown in ETF outflows and whether Ethereum can maintain its price above critical thresholds. Historically, November has shown mixed results for Ethereum, with a median loss of 5.18% but an average gain of 4.28% over the past 11 Novembers. The market's reaction to these factors will determine Ethereum's short-term price trajectory.
Beyond the Headlines
The current market behavior of Ethereum, characterized by significant ETF outflows and 'whale' movements, underscores the evolving maturity and institutionalization of the cryptocurrency market. The ability of large investors and institutional products like ETFs to significantly influence price movements highlights the increasing interconnectedness between traditional finance and digital assets. This situation also brings to light the concept of 'dormant whales' and their potential impact on market stability when they decide to move their holdings. The transparency of on-chain data allows for real-time tracking of these large movements, providing insights into market sentiment and potential future price action. This period could serve as a test of Ethereum's resilience and its long-term value proposition in the face of significant selling pressure from various market participants.
