What's Happening?
Miami International Airport (MIA) is currently hosting an art exhibition titled 'The Underline: A Canvas for the Community,' showcasing 13 large-scale public art installations from Miami-Dade County’s Metrorail system. The exhibition, located at MIA’s
Connecting Communities Wall near door 11 on the arrivals level, will run through May 2, 2027. This initiative provides travelers with a preview of The Underline’s growing public art program, which features works by local and international artists. The Underline project aims to transform the land beneath Miami’s Metrorail into a 10-mile linear park, urban trail, and public space that integrates art, nature, and community. Miami-Dade County Commissioner Raquel Regalado, The Underline CEO Eulois Cleckley, and Friends of The Underline Public Art Curator Rina Gitlin joined MIA Director and CEO Ralph Cutié for the exhibition's opening.
Why It's Important?
This exhibition at Miami International Airport is significant as it leverages a major international gateway to expose a global audience to Miami-Dade County's vibrant arts and culture scene. By showcasing art from The Underline, MIA is not only enhancing the travel experience for its passengers but also promoting a local community initiative that transforms urban spaces. This collaboration highlights the growing trend of integrating art into public infrastructure, making cultural experiences more accessible to residents and visitors alike. For Miami-Dade County, it serves as a powerful marketing tool, encouraging tourism and engagement with The Underline project. It also underscores the value placed on public art as a means of fostering community identity and enriching the urban environment, potentially inspiring similar initiatives in other U.S. cities.
What's Next?
The exhibition at MIA is scheduled to run until May 2, 2027, providing an extended period for travelers to engage with the showcased art. Following this, The Underline will likely continue to expand its public art program along its 10-mile corridor, with ongoing efforts to integrate art, nature, and community activities. The success of this airport exhibition could lead to future collaborations between MIA and local cultural organizations, further solidifying the airport's role as a cultural hub. The Underline, supported by a public-private partnership, will continue to develop its linear park, urban trail, and public spaces, offering more free programs and activations annually to connect communities through art, music, wellness, and nature.
Beyond the Headlines
The initiative to bring public art from The Underline to Miami International Airport reflects a broader cultural shift towards democratizing art and integrating it into everyday public spaces. This move challenges traditional notions of art consumption, moving it from exclusive galleries to accessible public venues like airports and urban parks. It also highlights the potential for public-private partnerships to drive significant cultural and urban development projects. The Underline's transformation of underutilized land beneath the Metrorail into a vibrant community space serves as a model for sustainable urban planning and community engagement. This approach not only beautifies the city but also fosters a sense of pride and belonging among residents, while offering unique cultural experiences to visitors.
