What's Happening?
A bistate initiative led by the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) has launched with the goal of transforming the Kansas City region into a national hub for critical materials innovation and production. This effort is backed by an award of up to $160
million from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) for the Critical Materials Crossroads Engine. Leaders from both Missouri and Kansas, including Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe, U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt of Missouri, U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri, and U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids of Kansas, gathered at Union Station to celebrate the launch. The initiative aims to address the U.S.'s reliance on foreign supply chains for essential materials like rare-earth minerals, which are crucial for various modern technologies, from cellphones and batteries to medical devices and national defense. The collaboration involves over 260 organizations, including universities, businesses, government agencies, and civic leaders, all working to build a domestic critical materials ecosystem.

This initiative is critical for strengthening U.S. supply chains and reducing vulnerability to global disruptions, as highlighted by U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the fragility of relying heavily on other countries for critical materials, leading to higher prices and delays for American businesses and consumers. By establishing a domestic ecosystem for critical materials in the Kansas City region, the U.S. aims to secure its access to essential components for advanced manufacturing, technology, healthcare, and national defense. U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt emphasized the need to reduce dependence on countries like China for these materials. The project is projected to generate $40 billion in gross economic output, support approximately 10,000 jobs, and spur over $3 billion in public-private investment within the greater Kansas City region, significantly boosting the local and national economy.
What's Next?
The launch marks the beginning of intensive work for the Critical Materials Crossroads Engine. The initiative will focus on integrating research, innovation, workforce development, manufacturing, and commercialization to build a robust domestic critical materials industry. A leadership group comprising regional business and civic leaders has been formed to champion the initiative, attract companies to the critical materials sector, and develop the necessary regional ecosystem. UMKC Chancellor Mauli Agrawal noted that the collaboration across state lines and various sectors is key to realizing the project's ambitious goals. The NSF Regional Innovation Engines program, under which this award was granted, is designed to translate research into new technologies, businesses, and economic growth, indicating a long-term commitment to developing this sector in the region.
