What's Happening?
Steam, the popular digital distribution platform for video games, is experiencing a significant increase in the number of games requiring AI-disclosures. This trend follows the introduction of a disclosure box in January 2024, which mandates developers
to indicate the use of AI in their games. According to a study by Sulka Haro, co-founder of the Finnish studio behind Pax Dei, the percentage of games with AI disclosures has risen from 10.9% in 2024 to 30.8% in 2026. The surge in AI-flagged games is attributed to the growing influence of AI in game development, with projections suggesting that by 2027-2028, more than half of all new games on Steam will include an AI disclosure.
Why It's Important?
The increasing prevalence of AI-disclosures on Steam highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in the gaming industry. This shift could have significant implications for game developers, particularly smaller studios that may struggle to compete with AI-driven content. The rise of AI in game development could lead to a saturation of the market with AI-generated games, making it more challenging for unique, human-crafted games to gain visibility. Additionally, the trend raises questions about the quality and originality of AI-generated content, as many AI-flagged games reportedly receive poor reviews and generate little revenue.
What's Next?
As the number of AI-flagged games continues to rise, Steam may need to implement new filtering systems to help users navigate the increasing volume of content. Developers and industry stakeholders might also push for clearer guidelines and standards regarding AI use in games to ensure transparency and maintain quality. The gaming community could see debates around the ethical implications of AI in game development, including concerns about job displacement and the potential loss of creative diversity.
Beyond the Headlines
The trend towards AI-disclosures in gaming could signal a broader shift in how digital content is created and consumed. As AI technology advances, it may become a standard tool in various creative industries, potentially transforming traditional roles and workflows. This evolution could lead to new opportunities for innovation but also necessitate discussions about the ethical use of AI and its impact on human creativity.
