What's Happening?
Billion Rise Knitting, a vertically integrated company specializing in textile-based materials for sportswear, swimwear, underwear, and lingerie, has opened a new high-tech factory in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam. This expansion, backed by a $100 million investment,
aims to provide greater sourcing flexibility for apparel brands, particularly those in the U.S., seeking to diversify their manufacturing locations. The facility, which will span an estimated 320,000 square meters upon completion of all three phases, is expected to have an annual production capacity of up to 100 million meters. Phase one is already complete, with additional knitting, dyeing, and printing capacities planned for phases two and three, scheduled for completion in Q3 2027 and Q3 2029, respectively.
Why It's Important?
This strategic move by Billion Rise Knitting is highly significant for the U.S. activewear and intimate apparel industries. Major U.S. brands are increasingly looking to diversify their sourcing beyond traditional manufacturing hubs like China, and Vietnam has emerged as an attractive alternative due to its reputation for producing high-volume, technically complex performance fabrics. This new facility offers U.S. brands the opportunity to localize more of their value chain, from fabric production to finished garments, potentially reducing lead times, mitigating supply chain risks, and enhancing overall efficiency. The investment also includes advanced capabilities like a wastewater treatment system and solar rooftop, aligning with growing demands for sustainable manufacturing practices from U.S. consumers and brands.
What's Next?
U.S. activewear and intimate brands are expected to increasingly leverage Billion Rise's new Vietnam facility to diversify their supply chains. This will likely lead to a shift in sourcing patterns within the U.S. apparel industry, with more brands establishing manufacturing relationships in Vietnam. Billion Rise plans to showcase its new capabilities and fabric innovations at international trade shows, further attracting U.S. and European brands. The company's investment in materials strategy expertise, AI, and 3D visualization tools suggests a future where technology plays an even greater role in helping brands identify market opportunities and streamline product development. The completion of phases two and three will further expand the facility's capacity and capabilities, solidifying Vietnam's role as a key manufacturing hub.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate commercial benefits, Billion Rise's expansion reflects a broader geopolitical and economic trend of supply chain diversification. U.S. companies are increasingly seeking to reduce reliance on single-country manufacturing, driven by factors such as trade tensions, geopolitical instability, and the desire for more resilient supply chains. This shift not only impacts manufacturing locations but also encourages the development of new technological solutions in materials and production. The focus on sustainable practices within the new facility also highlights the growing importance of environmental responsibility in global manufacturing, influencing how U.S. brands select their partners and how products are made worldwide.
