What's Happening?
Vinson & Elkins (V&E) has significantly bolstered its structured finance and securitization practice by hiring two finance lawyers from Latham & Watkins in New York. Loren Finegold, who was the global vice chair of Latham's structured finance practice for
25 years, joins V&E as its new structured finance leader. He is accompanied by Ed Comber, who has been made partner at V&E after serving as counsel at Latham. Finegold is recognized for pioneering new asset classes and transaction structures, including the first midstream oil and gas securitizations and the first securitizations of hyperscale and colocation data centers and wireless tower ground leases. Comber brings expertise in various asset classes, including oil and gas, GPU financings, shipping containers, and music catalog master trust securitizations. This move follows V&E's earlier hires in its New York finance bench, including Melissa Raciti-Knapp from Freshfields and a three-partner team from Baker Botts and Kirkland & Ellis in Houston.
Why It's Important?
This strategic expansion by Vinson & Elkins underscores the growing demand for specialized legal expertise in structured finance, particularly at the intersection of energy, infrastructure, and capital markets. The firm aims to capitalize on the significant opportunities arising from companies and capital providers seeking innovative financing solutions for diverse asset pools. The addition of seasoned professionals like Finegold and Comber, with their track record of pioneering complex securitization structures, positions V&E to address the evolving capital needs in sectors such as digital infrastructure and renewable energy. This move reflects a broader trend in the legal industry where firms are enhancing their capabilities in high-growth areas to meet client demands and gain a competitive edge.
What's Next?
With the integration of Finegold and Comber, Vinson & Elkins is expected to expand its structured finance offerings, particularly in energy, infrastructure, and other esoteric asset classes. The firm will likely leverage the new partners' expertise to develop innovative financing solutions for clients navigating complex capital markets. This expansion could lead to an increase in V&E's market share in structured finance transactions, attracting new clients and strengthening relationships with existing ones. The firm's continued focus on strategic hires indicates an ongoing commitment to building a robust finance practice capable of addressing the intricate financial needs of its clients in dynamic industries.
Beyond the Headlines
The recruitment of top-tier legal talent in structured finance highlights the increasing complexity and specialization within the financial sector. As industries like energy and infrastructure undergo significant transformations, the need for sophisticated financial instruments and legal guidance becomes paramount. The move also reflects the competitive nature of the legal market, where firms actively seek to acquire expertise that aligns with emerging economic trends. The focus on 'new asset classes' and 'pioneering' transaction structures suggests a forward-looking approach, anticipating future market demands and regulatory landscapes. This trend could lead to further innovation in financial products and services, driven by the legal frameworks that enable them.
