What's Happening?
The U.S. Department of Justice, along with attorneys general from 17 states, has announced proposed settlements with three of the largest egg producers in the country: Cal-Maine Foods, Hickman's Egg Ranch, and Versova. These settlements come after allegations
that the companies coordinated to manipulate a key pricing benchmark, which led to inflated egg prices for consumers nationwide. The federal officials have also filed a civil antitrust lawsuit against these companies. As part of the settlement, the companies have agreed to pay a combined $3.3 million to the participating states and donate approximately 53 million eggs to food banks and nonprofit organizations. The Justice Department claims that the companies manipulated daily price quotations published by Urner Barry, an industry benchmark influencing wholesale egg prices, by coordinating bidding activity to create the appearance of stronger demand.
