What's Happening?
Authentic Studios, a division of Authentic Brands Group, has co-produced 'EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert,' a new concert film that has been released across 47 markets and over 3,700 screens. The film centers on Elvis Presley's live performances from his
1970s Las Vegas residency, incorporating previously unseen 16mm footage from 'Elvis on Tour' and 8mm film from the Graceland archive. It also features rediscovered audio recordings of Presley sharing his own narrative. The project originated from archival discoveries made by Baz Luhrmann and his team during the creation of his 2022 feature film 'Elvis.' Luhrmann, along with editor Jonathan Redmond, developed 'EPiC' from approximately 59 hours of unseen footage from Warner Bros. vaults, combined with audio and visual materials from the Graceland archive. Authentic Studios President Colin Smeeton stated that the company's foray into production began after the 'Elvis' feature, recognizing the Elvis story as its own intellectual property. Corey Salter, Global President, Entertainment, described this move as an evolution of Authentic Brands Group from a traditional licensing business to a full-service content house.
Why It's Important?
This development signifies a strategic shift for Authentic Brands Group, a major player in intellectual property management, into direct content production. By co-producing 'EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert,' Authentic Studios is leveraging its extensive portfolio of iconic brands, like Elvis Presley, to create new revenue streams and deepen engagement with its intellectual property. This move could set a precedent for other brand management companies to transition into content creation, potentially altering the landscape of entertainment production. For the U.S. entertainment industry, it means a new, well-resourced player entering the production space, which could lead to more projects based on established cultural figures and archives. It also highlights the enduring commercial viability of historical figures like Elvis Presley, demonstrating how archival material can be re-contextualized for contemporary audiences. This expansion could also impact the job market in the entertainment sector, creating new opportunities in film production, archival research, and content development.
What's Next?
Following the global release of 'EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert,' Authentic Studios will likely monitor its performance in terms of box office revenue, critical reception, and awards recognition. The success of this film could influence Authentic Brands Group's future investment in similar content production ventures, potentially leading to more films, documentaries, or series based on other brands within their portfolio. This strategic shift suggests a long-term commitment to becoming a significant content house, which could involve acquiring more production talent and infrastructure. The company may also explore new distribution models or partnerships to maximize the reach and impact of its content. Furthermore, the positive reception of 'EPiC' could encourage other intellectual property holders to explore similar production strategies, leading to a broader trend of brand-driven content creation in the entertainment industry.
Beyond the Headlines
Authentic Studios' move into content production with 'EPiC' underscores a deeper trend in the entertainment industry: the increasing value of intellectual property and the desire to control its narrative and presentation. By directly producing content, companies like Authentic Brands Group can ensure that their brands are portrayed in a manner consistent with their long-term vision and commercial goals, rather than relying solely on external producers. This vertical integration allows for greater creative control and potentially higher profit margins. It also raises questions about the balance between historical accuracy and commercial appeal in biographical and archival-based content. The film's use of 'rediscovered recordings of Presley telling his side of the story' suggests an effort to offer an authentic, yet curated, perspective, which can shape public perception of historical figures. This trend could lead to a proliferation of 'authorized' content, offering new insights but also potentially limiting alternative interpretations.
