What's Happening?
Peak Energy has announced plans to establish the first U.S. factory dedicated to grid-scale sodium-ion battery systems in Sacramento, California. The company will invest $71 million in the 183,000-square-foot facility, which is expected to begin production
in early 2027. The plant will have the capacity to produce up to 4 gigawatt-hours of storage systems annually, enough to power nearly 4 million homes. The facility will be located in Metro Air Park, benefiting from existing power infrastructure to expedite its launch. The plant will focus on assembling large containerized storage systems for the grid, each capable of storing 3.1 megawatt-hours of electricity.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of this plant marks a significant step in diversifying the U.S. energy storage landscape. Sodium-ion batteries offer a cost-effective and abundant alternative to lithium-ion batteries, which are currently dominant in the market. Sodium is about 1,000 times more abundant than lithium, making it a more sustainable option for large-scale energy storage. This development supports domestic manufacturing and reduces reliance on imported materials. The plant is expected to create 239 jobs, contributing to local economic growth. Additionally, sodium-ion batteries provide strong thermal stability, reducing the need for complex cooling systems and lowering maintenance costs.
What's Next?
Peak Energy plans to begin commercial shipments from the Sacramento plant in the first quarter of 2027. The company has already secured significant customer commitments, including a major agreement with Jupiter Power and Energy Vault. As demand for grid storage continues to grow, driven by the expansion of solar and wind power, the Sacramento facility will play a crucial role in meeting this demand. The project positions Sacramento as a key hub for the next phase of American energy storage, potentially leading to further investments and developments in the region.
