What's Happening?
Firmus Technologies, an Australian AI infrastructure firm, has announced a significant partnership with Nvidia to construct a 360MW data center campus in Batam, Indonesia. This facility, expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2027, will house
up to 170,000 Nvidia accelerator chips. The partnership, which spans eight years until 2034, involves an economic alignment model that includes revenue sharing and credit support, allowing Firmus to procure Nvidia infrastructure for AI-native, enterprise, and ISV customers. The Batam facility is designed as a multi-tenant project aimed at AI-native customers, differing from Firmus' Australian projects that target hyperscaler customers. This development marks one of the largest AI infrastructure projects in the Asia-Pacific region.

The partnership between Firmus and Nvidia is poised to significantly impact the AI infrastructure landscape in Southeast Asia. By providing scalable, energy-efficient compute infrastructure, the project aims to level the playing field for smaller AI firms, enabling them to compete with larger companies. The strategic location of the Batam facility, near Singapore, positions it to meet the growing demands of the Asia-Pacific region's AI infrastructure. This expansion also represents a major step for Nvidia's DSX program, which seeks to make advanced AI infrastructure more accessible through revenue-sharing models. The project is expected to generate between $25 billion and $30 billion from committed offtake agreements in its first six years.

As the Batam data center approaches its operational phase, Firmus is also preparing for an initial public offering in 2026. The company, which started as a cryptocurrency mining operation, has pivoted to focus on AI infrastructure, leveraging Nvidia's technology to optimize its data centers. Beyond Indonesia, Firmus is expanding its AI factory footprint across Australia and Southeast Asia, with projects in Tasmania, Melbourne, South Australia, and New South Wales. The partnership with Nvidia is expected to enhance Firmus' position as a key player in the region's AI ecosystem, potentially attracting more AI-native companies to utilize its infrastructure.
