What's Happening?
Shell and BMW M Motorsport have announced the renewal of their partnership, which will focus on advancing sustainable fluid technologies in both motorsport and passenger vehicle programs. As part of this collaboration, Shell will continue as BMW M Motorsport's
official Premium Technology, Innovation, and Energy Partner. The partnership includes an expanded research and development mandate that emphasizes circular economy approaches to lubricant formulation. A significant outcome of this renewed collaboration was showcased at the 2026 Le Mans 24 Hours, where the #20 BMW M Hybrid V8 used a newly formulated engine oil. This oil, co-developed by Shell and BMW M Motorsport, is made with re-refined base oil derived from used oil streams, aiming to reduce environmental impact by reusing high-quality base oils.
Why It's Important?
The renewal of the partnership between Shell and BMW M Motorsport highlights a growing trend in the automotive and motorsport industries towards sustainability and environmental responsibility. By focusing on circular economy principles, the collaboration aims to reduce the environmental footprint of racing lubricants, which could set a precedent for other companies in the industry. This move not only benefits the environment but also aligns with increasing consumer demand for sustainable products. The partnership could influence other automotive manufacturers to adopt similar practices, potentially leading to broader industry changes in how lubricants and other automotive fluids are developed and used.
What's Next?
The expanded R&D mandate under the renewed partnership suggests that Shell and BMW M Motorsport will continue to innovate in the field of sustainable lubricants. Future developments may include further advancements in re-refined oil technologies and their application in both racing and consumer vehicles. The success of these initiatives could encourage other companies to explore similar sustainable practices, potentially leading to industry-wide changes. Additionally, the partnership may result in new product offerings that appeal to environmentally conscious consumers, further driving the market towards sustainable solutions.
