What's Happening?
Seabridge Gold has secured a US$100 million loan, equivalent to $142.9 million, to fund its summer work program at the Kerr-Sulphurets-Mitchell (KSM) Copper-Gold Project in British Columbia, Canada. The loan, which can be drawn in minimum tranches of
US$10 million, carries a 7% interest rate compounded monthly and matures on December 31, 2026. The funding will support construction of access roads, drilling, test pitting, and sampling to advance feasibility-level engineering and mine design. Seabridge is also seeking a joint venture partner for the project, which is one of the world's largest undeveloped gold-copper projects.
Why It's Important?
The loan provides Seabridge Gold with the necessary capital to continue developing the KSM Project, which has been designated a priority project by the provincial government due to its economic significance. The project's potential to produce significant quantities of gold, copper, and silver could have substantial economic benefits, including job creation and increased regional investment. However, the project faces legal challenges and opposition from Indigenous communities, which could impact its development timeline. The successful advancement of the KSM Project could position Seabridge as a major player in the mining industry, with implications for global gold and copper markets.
