What's Happening?
Ryan O’Connell has announced that the adaptation of DeuxMoi's novel 'Anon Pls' will not proceed at HBO Max. During an appearance on Bravo's 'Watch What Happens Live,' O’Connell confirmed that the series, which had been given a script-to-series order in 2022,
is no longer moving forward. The series was to be produced by Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, with O’Connell and Diablo Cody attached as writers. 'Anon Pls' is based on a novel by DeuxMoi, a pseudonymous Instagram account known for celebrity gossip, which has amassed over 2 million followers. The story follows Cricket Lopez, an assistant to a celebrity stylist, who inadvertently turns her Instagram account into a popular gossip blog.
Why It's Important?
The cancellation of 'Anon Pls' at HBO Max highlights the challenges faced by adaptations of social media phenomena into mainstream media. The series was anticipated due to the popularity of DeuxMoi's Instagram account, which has become a significant player in the celebrity gossip landscape. This development may impact HBO Max's content strategy, as it seeks to balance original programming with adaptations of popular digital content. The decision also reflects the competitive nature of streaming services, where content must quickly prove its potential to move forward. For fans of DeuxMoi, the cancellation may be disappointing, as it limits the expansion of the brand into new media formats.
