What's Happening?
A new initiative called the Next Generation Collective has been launched to provide support for young individuals in the entertainment, music, and creator economy as they navigate life in the public eye. Unveiled at Hollywood & Mind’s inaugural summit
in New York City, the collective aims to offer guidance, resources, and a stronger community for young performers and their families. The Kids Mental Health Foundation, founded by Nationwide Children’s Hospital, is also a partner in this announcement. The collective was established by Lilah Kojoori, a communications executive with over 20 years of experience working with young talent at Nickelodeon and Paramount+. Its founding advisory board includes talent and family members who have firsthand experience with the challenges of growing up in the public eye, such as Angel Carter Conrad, Logan Henderson, and Isabela Merced.
Why It's Important?
This initiative addresses a critical and often overlooked aspect of the entertainment industry: the mental health and well-being of young talent. Growing up in the public eye can expose young individuals to immense pressure, scrutiny, and unique psychological challenges that can impact their development and long-term mental health. The Next Generation Collective's focus on providing expert-informed guidance on mental health, boundaries, and the realities of working in the industry fills a significant gap. By bringing together clinical mental health expertise, industry leadership, and lived experience, the collective aims to create a more supportive and protective environment for young performers. This is crucial for fostering healthier career trajectories and personal lives for the next generation of stars, potentially reducing instances of burnout, anxiety, and other mental health struggles that have historically affected young talent.
What's Next?
The Next Generation Collective plans to work with its founding advisory board and partners to develop expert-informed resources, education, and support systems for young people, their families, and the studios, productions, agencies, managers, and platforms that shape their professional environments. Starting next year, these resources will become available, with additional programming and partnership opportunities expected to be announced in the coming months. The Kids Mental Health Foundation will provide clinical guidance to ensure the collective's work is aligned with evidence-informed mental health educational resources. Hollywood & Mind will facilitate connections within the industry and help amplify the collective's efforts. The initial focus will be on learning from the community they intend to support, indicating a thoughtful and community-driven approach to developing their programs.
Beyond the Headlines
The establishment of the Next Generation Collective signifies a growing recognition within the entertainment industry of its responsibility towards the mental well-being of its youngest members. This initiative could catalyze a broader cultural shift, moving away from a sole focus on performance and profit towards a more holistic approach that prioritizes the human element of young talent. It highlights the ethical imperative for industries that involve minors in high-pressure environments to provide robust support systems. Furthermore, this effort could set a precedent for other industries where young individuals are exposed to public scrutiny and intense demands, fostering a more compassionate and sustainable model for nurturing talent. The collaboration between mental health experts and entertainment professionals also underscores the increasing integration of psychological well-being into professional development frameworks.
