The California Energy Commission (CEC) has unanimously approved a new regulation requiring most replacement tires sold in the state to meet stringent energy-efficiency standards, specifically targeting rolling resistance. This new law mandates that by
2029, tires must have a maximum rolling resistance level of 9.1 newtons per kilonewton (N/kN), further tightening to 7.2 N/kN by 2033. The CEC asserts that this lower limit represents the average rolling resistance of tires originally installed on new cars. This change is expected to significantly reduce the variety of tires available to Californian consumers, with an estimated 70% of currently sold tires not meeting the 2033 standard.
