What's Happening?
Cobalt Blue Holdings LLC, an Australian minerals-processing company, in partnership with American firm Glomar Minerals LLC, is considering Brunswick County as a potential site for a new polymetallic nodule refinery. This project could bring a $500 million
investment and create approximately 300 jobs. The refinery would process 200,000 tonnes of polymetallic nodules annually, producing 100,000 tonnes of manganese sulfate, which is crucial for the battery, electric, and defense industries. The project is part of a broader effort to establish the first polymetallic nodule processing facility in the U.S. The companies are currently evaluating four potential sites, including locations in Texas and New Orleans, and are in discussions with state and local leaders to secure economic incentives.
Why It's Important?
The proposed refinery represents a significant investment in the U.S. critical minerals supply chain, which is crucial for reducing dependency on foreign sources, particularly from China. By establishing a domestic processing facility, the project aims to support the growing demand for materials used in batteries and other advanced technologies. This initiative aligns with U.S. efforts to bolster its manufacturing capabilities in the face of geopolitical tensions. The creation of 300 jobs would also provide a substantial economic boost to Brunswick County, enhancing local employment opportunities and infrastructure development.
What's Next?
The next steps involve site visits and economic evaluations of the shortlisted locations. The companies plan to finalize their site selection within the next few months, followed by a feasibility study and site permitting, expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The project will also require ongoing discussions with state and local governments to secure necessary permits and incentives. Additionally, environmental considerations will be crucial, given the potential impact of ocean floor mining on marine ecosystems.
