What's Happening?
Renewable energy developer Avantus has secured over $525 million in construction financing for the Aratina 2 Solar and Storage Project in California. The funding, provided by BBVA, CIBC, and Santander, will support the development of a facility with 150
MW of solar power generation capacity and 452 MWh of energy storage. Located in eastern Kern County, the project is currently under construction and is expected to begin commercial operations by the end of the year. The financing package includes a tax equity bridge and letters of credit, in addition to construction funding. Avantus plans to maintain an ownership stake and operate the facility as part of its independent power producer strategy.
Why It's Important?
The Aratina 2 project represents a significant advancement in the U.S. renewable energy sector, particularly in California, one of the country's most complex energy markets. By increasing solar power capacity and integrating energy storage, the project supports the transition to cleaner energy sources and helps meet the growing energy demand. The involvement of major financial institutions like BBVA, CIBC, and Santander underscores the confidence in Avantus' ability to deliver high-quality infrastructure projects. Additionally, the project will create approximately 300 union construction jobs and generate tax revenue to support local public services, contributing to economic growth in Kern County.
What's Next?
Avantus is on track to bring 5 GW of capacity online by 2030, with plans to have 788 MW of capacity operational and another 800 MW under construction by the end of the year. This includes the Kitt Solar and Energy Storage Project in Arizona, which recently secured over $300 million in financing. As Avantus continues to expand its portfolio, the company aims to play a pivotal role in the U.S. energy landscape by delivering resilient, long-term energy solutions. The success of the Aratina 2 project could pave the way for further investments in renewable energy infrastructure across the country.
