A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that a mere 20 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise can significantly sharpen brain function after a night of poor sleep, offering a similar cognitive boost to a 90-minute
nap. Researchers had 54 young adults stay awake for 30 hours, then divided them into groups: one cycled for 20 minutes, another napped for 90 minutes, and a control group sat on a stationary bike without pedaling. Both the exercise and nap groups showed significantly better memory recall than the control group, with nearly identical recall rates (21% for exercisers, 23% for nappers). While exercise didn't reduce fatigue like napping, it boosted brainpower by increasing oxygen flow to the brain and regulating serotonin levels, which are often dysregulated after sleep deprivation.
