What's Happening?
Sam Raimi's supernatural thriller, 'Every House is Haunted,' has been acquired by 20th Century Studios, a Disney subsidiary, after spending five years in development limbo at Netflix. The project, based on Ian Rogers' short story 'The House on Ashley
Avenue,' was initially picked up by Netflix in 2021. While the reasons for the delay remain undisclosed, the film is now moving forward with Adam Schindler and Brian Netto slated to direct. Raimi will serve as a producer alongside Zainab Azizi, Roy Lee, and Andrew Childs. This development marks a significant shift for the film, bringing it under a new studio after a prolonged period of inactivity.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is important for the entertainment industry as it highlights the dynamic nature of film development and distribution, particularly in the streaming era. Netflix's initial hold on the project for half a decade before its transfer to Disney's 20th Century Studios demonstrates how major studios are strategically acquiring and re-evalizing content. For Disney, adding a Sam Raimi-produced horror film to its slate through 20th Century Studios diversifies its content offerings and strengthens its position in the horror genre, which has a dedicated audience. This move could also signal a trend where projects that face delays at one major platform find new life and resources with competitors, impacting content pipelines and audience expectations across the industry.
What's Next?
With 'Every House is Haunted' now under 20th Century Studios, the next steps will likely involve accelerating pre-production, including casting announcements and setting a production timeline. Directors Adam Schindler and Brian Netto will move forward with the project, aiming to bring Ian Rogers' story to the screen. The film's progression under Disney's umbrella could lead to a theatrical release or a prominent placement on Disney's streaming platforms, such as Hulu or Disney+, depending on the studio's distribution strategy for horror content. Industry observers will be watching to see how quickly the film moves into production and how its new studio affiliation influences its creative direction and eventual release.
Beyond the Headlines
The transfer of 'Every House is Haunted' from Netflix to 20th Century Studios could reflect broader shifts in content strategy among major media companies. It suggests that studios are increasingly willing to invest in projects that have been stalled elsewhere, recognizing the value of established names like Sam Raimi in attracting audiences. This trend might lead to more fluidity in project development, where intellectual property can move between platforms based on strategic fit, financial considerations, or creative alignment. It also underscores the competitive landscape of the streaming and film industries, where securing compelling content remains a top priority for market leaders. The success of this film under its new home could influence future decisions regarding content acquisition and development across the industry.
