What's Happening?
Chesapeake Utilities Corporation has unveiled plans for a $1.2 billion natural gas infrastructure project in Florida, known as the Florida Energy Pathway (FEP). This project, announced during the company's second-quarter earnings call, is set to be the largest
in the company's history. The FEP will be developed by Peninsula Pipeline Company, a subsidiary of Chesapeake Utilities, and will span 97 miles from Palm Beach County to Miami-Dade County. The pipeline aims to increase natural gas transportation capacity, address regional supply constraints, and improve system reliability. The project is backed by commitments from multiple investment-grade shippers, totaling nearly 250,000 dekatherms per day. Chesapeake Utilities plans to bring in third-party partners to share up to 49% of the project, with Peninsula Pipeline expected to fund and own at least 51%. The pipeline is anticipated to enter service in 2030, subject to final commissioning.
Why It's Important?
The Florida Energy Pathway project represents a significant investment in the state's energy infrastructure, potentially enhancing energy reliability and capacity in a region facing supply constraints. By increasing natural gas transportation capacity, the project could support regional growth and energy independence. The involvement of third-party partners in the project could mitigate financial risks for Chesapeake Utilities while allowing for a more diversified investment approach. This project also aligns with Chesapeake Utilities' strategic goals of expanding its footprint in Florida, following its acquisition of Florida City Gas in 2023. The anticipated capital investments exceeding $2.2 billion from 2024 through 2028 highlight the company's commitment to long-term growth and infrastructure development.
What's Next?
Chesapeake Utilities will proceed with final engineering, design, permitting, and other development work for the Florida Energy Pathway. The company will also continue to seek additional commitments from shippers and finalize financing options, including potential partnerships. As the project progresses, Chesapeake Utilities will focus on managing capital needs and sharing risks with partners. The company will also continue its investments in the Delmarva region, including the $75 million Delmarva Regional Enhancement project, which aims to improve system reliability and capacity. These efforts reflect Chesapeake Utilities' broader strategy to enhance energy infrastructure and support regional growth.
