What's Happening?
New Barn Organics, a company specializing in regenerative organic-certified foods and plant-based milks, has partnered with BAM the Brand, Inc. (BAM), the creator of America’s first buckwheat-based plant milk. This collaboration aims to promote buckwheat's
role in regenerative agriculture and expand its presence in the American diet. The partnership originated through Whole Foods Market’s Local and Emerging Accelerator Program (LEAP), where BAM was a participant and New Barn served as a mentor. New Barn Organics has acquired BAM’s Buckwheat Milk recipes and is reintroducing Buckwheat Milk to the market under its own brand. BAM will now focus on scaling the Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) buckwheat supply chain and introducing its Buckwheat Milk Powder across various new product categories. The newly launched Buckwheat Milk is gluten-free, Certified Seed Oil Free, and ROC, marking New Barn's first SKU developed from the ground up as ROC.
Why It's Important?
This partnership signifies a notable step in the U.S. food industry towards sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices. By elevating buckwheat, a climate-resilient crop, the collaboration addresses growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly and healthy food options. The focus on Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) products indicates a commitment to farming methods that improve soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare, which can have long-term positive impacts on the environment and food security. For consumers, it offers a new plant-based milk alternative that aligns with ethical and health-conscious choices. For the agricultural sector, it could encourage more farmers to adopt regenerative practices and diversify their crops, potentially creating new market opportunities and strengthening the resilience of the food system against climate change.
What's Next?
New Barn Organics will begin rolling out its new Buckwheat Milk in regional Whole Foods Markets across Southern Pacific, Northern California, Southwest, Rocky Mountain, and Florida. This initial launch will test market reception and consumer demand for the product. BAM will expand its role as a supplier, focusing on scaling the ROC buckwheat supply chain and introducing its Buckwheat Milk Powder for broader applications in the food and beverage industry. The success of this partnership could encourage other food companies to explore similar collaborations and invest in regenerative agriculture. The Regenerative Organic Alliance (ROA), which provided guidance in developing the supply chain, will likely continue to support and certify such initiatives, further promoting the adoption of regenerative practices across the U.S. food landscape.
Beyond the Headlines
This collaboration extends beyond a simple product launch; it represents a strategic alignment within the food industry to address critical environmental and dietary challenges. By championing buckwheat, a crop known for its resilience and nutritional value, the partnership contributes to diversifying agricultural systems that are often dominated by a few staple crops. This diversification can enhance ecological stability and reduce reliance on resource-intensive farming. Furthermore, the emphasis on Regenerative Organic Certified products sets a higher standard for sustainability, potentially influencing consumer expectations and driving broader industry shifts towards more holistic and ethical food production. The partnership also highlights the increasing role of mentorship programs, like Whole Foods Market's LEAP, in fostering innovation and sustainable growth within the emerging food sector.
