Joan Baez, the iconic folk singer, made a memorable appearance at the 2026 Newport Folk Festival, joining Nathaniel Rateliff & Friends during their closing set. At 85, Baez danced on stage to a new song, 'It Surprises Me,' and invited Dave Matthews to join her,
much to the delight of the audience. The performance was part of a star-studded finale that included artists like Mavis Staples, Brandi Carlile, and Brandon Flowers. Baez, who has a long history with the festival dating back to its first edition in 1959, helped close the event with a rendition of 'America the Beautiful.'
