Carmen Hull, an Assistant Professor with joint appointments in Art + Design and Architecture, is pioneering data physicalization through her project 'Rap Tapestry.' This 8-foot by 8-foot woven tapestry visually represents the lyrics and rhythm of the 1993
hip-hop song '93 ’til Infinity' by Souls of Mischief. Hull's work focuses on translating complex data sets into tangible forms to offer new insights and engage audiences. The genesis of Rap Tapestry stemmed from conversations with Tajai Massey, a rapper from Souls of Mischief, where Hull explored how his creative process could be visually represented. She received a CAMD seed grant and collaborated with student researchers to digitally categorize and track essential elements of the song, generating a computer visualization to guide the physical tapestry's creation. The project aims to capture the flow metric and density of rhyme, elements crucial to rap music that traditional musical notation often misses.

Additionally, Hull is working with the Northeastern University Plastics Center on a public art installation that visualizes plastics data using glitter, aiming to engage people with sustainability issues through an unexpected medium.
