What's Happening?
Hachette Book Group (HBG) has announced significant leadership changes, effective January 1, 2027. Ben Sevier, currently President of the Grand Central Publishing Group, will be promoted to CEO of Hachette Book Group.
Richard Kitson will assume the role of President & Chief Operating Officer, Global English Language, Hachette. Both Sevier and Kitson will continue to report to David Shelley, who will transition to Executive Chair of Hachette UK and Hachette Book Group, while also taking on a new global advisory role for Hachette Livre. These promotions follow a period of substantial growth for HBG, which has become the third-largest trade publisher in the U.S. for the first time in 12 years, with an 18% increase in revenues from 2023-2025. The company has also emphasized its commitment to diversity and inclusion through its 'Changing the Story' initiative.
Why It's Important?
These leadership changes at Hachette Book Group are significant for the U.S. publishing industry. The promotion of Ben Sevier to CEO signals a strategic move to capitalize on HBG's recent growth and market position. His leadership, described as 'peerless and author-focused,' is expected to drive further success and innovation within the company. The expansion of David Shelley's role to a global advisory position indicates a broader strategy to enhance international collaboration and synergy across Hachette Livre's various imprints. Furthermore, the establishment of a new HBG publishing program in Canada, led by Sally Kim, highlights an effort to expand market reach and discover new talent, which could impact the North American literary landscape. These developments reflect a dynamic period in publishing, with a focus on growth, global integration, and a continued commitment to diverse voices and inclusive practices.
