What's Happening?
Curious Squirrel Bookshop, an independent bookstore located in downtown Zionsville, Indiana, has marked its third anniversary. Owner Aubrey Able, who transitioned from a career in law, opened the shop after seeing a 'for lease' sign and deciding to pursue
a long-held idea. The bookstore's mission is to amplify marginalized voices and underrepresented stories, curating books primarily by authors of color, disabled individuals, neurodivergent individuals, or queer authors, as well as those offering unique perspectives on subjects like IVF or alternative families. The shop hosts various community events, including monthly poetry open mic nights, book clubs, craft nights, story times, and seasonal celebrations for holidays like Christmas, Diwali, and Ramadan. They also run a 'Paws to Read' program with therapy dogs for children and partner with organizations like the Indy Book Project to promote literacy.
Why It's Important?
The Curious Squirrel Bookshop's commitment to amplifying marginalized voices addresses a significant need for diverse representation in literature and retail. By intentionally curating books from underrepresented authors and perspectives, the bookstore provides a platform for stories that might otherwise be overlooked in mainstream markets. This initiative contributes to a more inclusive literary landscape, allowing readers to encounter a broader range of experiences and viewpoints. Furthermore, as an independent bookstore, it plays a vital role in fostering community engagement through its numerous events, from poetry nights to children's reading programs. In an era dominated by large online retailers, local bookstores like Curious Squirrel serve as cultural hubs, promoting literacy, critical thinking, and community cohesion, while also supporting local economies and offering a personalized shopping experience that larger entities often cannot replicate.
What's Next?
Curious Squirrel Bookshop plans to continue its mission of promoting diverse voices and fostering community engagement. The store will maintain its schedule of regular events, including monthly poetry open mic nights, book clubs, and children's story times. Owner Aubrey Able expressed a desire to partner with even more nonprofit organizations in the future, expanding the bookstore's reach and impact on literacy and community support. The shop will also continue its participation in local and regional book events, such as the Indy Indie Book Crawl, to connect with a wider audience and collaborate with other independent booksellers. The ongoing challenge for the bookstore will be to balance its niche curation with customer demand and compete effectively with larger retailers, relying on its unique offerings and strong community ties to sustain its growth and mission.
Beyond the Headlines
The Curious Squirrel Bookshop exemplifies a growing movement among independent businesses to integrate social mission with commercial enterprise. By prioritizing the amplification of marginalized voices, the bookstore is not just selling books but actively shaping cultural narratives and promoting social awareness. This approach challenges traditional retail models by demonstrating that a business can thrive while upholding strong ethical and social values. The store's success, despite competition from large online retailers, highlights the enduring value of physical community spaces and personalized curation in an increasingly digital world. It also underscores the power of local businesses to act as catalysts for social change, fostering empathy and understanding through literature and community interaction, thereby contributing to a more inclusive and equitable society beyond mere commerce.
