The European Union's Battery Regulation will require a Digital Battery Passport (DBP) for specific battery categories starting in February 2027. This mandate applies to Light Means of Transport (LMT) batteries, industrial batteries with a capacity exceeding
2 kWh, and electric vehicle (EV) batteries that are placed on the market or put into service within the EU. The DBP is accessed via a QR code, which will be mandatory on all batteries from the same date. This digital passport will provide comprehensive information about the battery, including its identification, material composition, carbon footprint, performance, and end-of-life management details. While the EU Registry will store unique identifiers and metadata, the full detailed information of the DBP will remain decentralized, requiring manufacturers to maintain their own data repositories.
