What's Happening?
Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has purchased four homes on Dartmouth Square West in Dublin for over €9 million as part of the MetroLink project. This acquisition follows a legal challenge by homeowners against the rail project, which was dropped
after TII agreed to buy the properties. The agreement includes a commitment to purchase between 10 and 15 homes, potentially costing up to €34 million. The properties are not slated for demolition but will be sold after the completion of the Charlemont station. This move is part of TII's strategy to secure necessary properties for the MetroLink without resorting to compulsory purchase orders.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of these properties is crucial for the progression of the MetroLink project, which aims to enhance Dublin's public transport infrastructure. By resolving legal disputes through property purchases, TII avoids potential delays that could have extended the project's timeline by one to two years. This approach also reflects a strategic use of resources to ensure the project's advancement. The MetroLink is expected to significantly improve connectivity in Dublin, linking Swords and Dublin Airport to the city center, and is projected to cost up to €19 billion. The project's success is vital for Dublin's economic growth and urban development.
