What's Happening?
The inaugural Fin-Classic Special Ice Hockey Tournament took place over Memorial Day Weekend at Sharks Ice San Jose, bringing together nearly 100 hockey players from across the United States. Organized by One Step Beyond, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to providing
opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities, the event celebrated inclusion, competition, and community. The tournament featured players of all abilities, emphasizing skill development and camaraderie. The One Step Sharks team, a key part of the organization’s offerings, participated in the event, which was supported by the Sharks Foundation’s Goals for Kids program. This program contributed $25,250 to One Step Beyond, Inc., part of over $2.8 million donated to nonprofits since its inception. The weekend included on-ice drills, a welcome reception, and friendly matches, fostering a sense of belonging and joy among participants.
Why It's Important?
The Fin-Classic tournament highlights the importance of inclusivity in sports, providing a platform for athletes with intellectual disabilities to engage in competitive activities. By supporting such events, organizations like One Step Beyond, Inc. and the Sharks Foundation are promoting social integration and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. The financial backing from the Goals for Kids program underscores the role of community support in sustaining initiatives that empower marginalized groups. This event not only benefits the participants by offering them a chance to develop skills and form friendships but also raises awareness about the capabilities and contributions of people with disabilities, challenging societal stereotypes and fostering a more inclusive community.
What's Next?
The success of the Fin-Classic tournament sets the stage for it to become an annual event, as expressed by Jenné Johnson, Sharks Foundation Director of Operations. Future tournaments are expected to continue promoting inclusivity and community engagement, potentially expanding to include more participants and supporters. The ongoing collaboration between the Sharks Foundation and One Step Beyond, Inc. may inspire similar initiatives across the country, encouraging other organizations to invest in programs that support individuals with disabilities. As awareness grows, there could be increased advocacy for policies and funding that further enhance accessibility and opportunities in sports for all abilities.
