What's Happening?
Disney+ is raising the monthly price of its legacy streaming bundle from $24.99 to $27.99, effective for billing cycles on or after September 17. This increase, amounting to an additional $36 annually, affects long-time subscribers who have the bundle consisting
of Disney+ without advertisements, Hulu with advertisements, and the ad-supported ESPN Select (formerly ESPN+). According to Cord Cutters News, existing customers will not receive any new features or programming in exchange for the higher price. This legacy bundle is no longer available to new subscribers, and current subscribers who cancel or switch plans will be unable to return to it. The price hike represents approximately a 12% increase for these specific subscribers.
Why It's Important?
This price increase by Disney+ reflects a broader trend of rising subscription costs across the streaming industry, impacting consumers' entertainment budgets. While other streaming services like Netflix, Peacock, HBO Max, Apple TV, Paramount+, and YouTube Premium have also raised their rates, Disney+'s move is notable because it offers no additional content or features for the increased cost to legacy bundle subscribers. This could lead to subscriber churn as customers re-evaluate the value proposition of their streaming services. The decision also highlights the evolving strategy of streaming platforms, with Disney+ reportedly moving towards content that resembles social media, such as vertical videos and partnerships with platforms like TikTok, which may not align with the expectations of subscribers seeking premium entertainment.
What's Next?
Legacy Disney+ bundle subscribers have several weeks to decide whether to continue with the increased price or explore alternative streaming options. The new rate will be applied during their first billing cycle on or after September 17. Subscribers considering a change must be aware that leaving the discontinued legacy plan is permanent, and they will not be able to re-subscribe to it. Instead, they would need to choose from Disney's current lineup of bundles, which include a Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN Select Premium bundle at $32.99 per month (ad-free Disney+ and Hulu) or a standard ad-supported bundle for all three services at $21.99 per month. This situation forces a critical decision point for loyal, long-term customers.
Beyond the Headlines
The continuous rise in streaming service prices, exemplified by Disney+'s latest increase, suggests a shift in the streaming market from an initial phase of aggressive subscriber acquisition through low prices to a focus on profitability. This trend could lead to 'streaming fatigue' among consumers, who may become more selective about which services they retain, potentially consolidating their subscriptions to fewer platforms. The perceived lack of added value for the price hike, coupled with Disney+'s reported shift towards social media-like content, raises questions about the long-term strategy of major entertainment companies and their commitment to traditional premium content. This could also accelerate the adoption of ad-supported tiers as a more affordable option for consumers, further blurring the lines between traditional television and streaming services.
