What's Happening?
The Sioux Falls Roller Dollz, a volunteer-run roller derby league, announced their closure on June 16, 2026, after 20 years of operation. The league, known for empowering women through sports, began with a flyer on MySpace and quickly grew to a maxed-out
roster. The Roller Dollz were members of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association and were entirely skater-owned and operated. Over the years, they hosted community events like the Bacon Fest fundraiser and the Zombie Walk Sioux Falls. The league was celebrated for promoting positive body image and providing a sense of belonging and empowerment to women of various ages.
Why It's Important?
The disbandment of the Sioux Falls Roller Dollz marks the end of a significant community institution that provided a platform for women to engage in sports, build confidence, and foster community spirit. The league's closure highlights the challenges faced by volunteer-run sports organizations in sustaining operations over the long term. The Roller Dollz not only contributed to the local sports culture but also played a role in community engagement through their events and positive messaging. Their absence may leave a gap in local sports and community activities, affecting both participants and supporters.
