What's Happening?
HI Cravings Co-Op has officially opened its doors in Kapolei, marking a new chapter for the business known for its mobile food trucks. The founder, Jess Kamanaʻo, initially did not plan for a storefront in 2026, but the opportunity arose after Lanakai
Juice's Kamokila Boulevard location closed. Kamanaʻo envisioned a collaborative space, leading to the creation of the co-op model. The new establishment, which opened to the public on August 29, features spaces for three vendors: HI Cravings, Main Squeeze Lemonade, and a rotating vendor. The co-op also plans to build a merchandise section where other small businesses can sell their products, such as mochi or jewelry. This collaborative approach aims to create a community spot that offers diverse offerings and keeps customers engaged. The Kapolei storefront has also allowed HI Cravings to reintroduce some of its older menu items, complementing its existing three mobile trucks that operate across Oʻahu.
Why It's Important?
The opening of HI Cravings Co-Op in Kapolei signifies an innovative approach to small business growth and community engagement in the local economy. By creating a collaborative space for multiple vendors, the co-op model lowers overhead costs and provides a platform for emerging businesses to gain visibility and customer access without the full burden of a standalone storefront. This initiative fosters a supportive ecosystem for local entrepreneurs, promoting economic resilience and diversity within the Kapolei area. For consumers, it offers a wider variety of local products and services in one convenient location, enhancing the community's retail and dining landscape. This model could inspire similar collaborative ventures, strengthening local economies by empowering small businesses and creating vibrant community hubs that encourage local spending and support.
What's Next?
HI Cravings Co-Op is currently in its soft opening phase, with founder Jess Kamanaʻo focusing on understanding the workflow, parking dynamics, and overall customer experience. The co-op is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day except Wednesdays. Future plans include expanding the merchandise section to feature products from more local small businesses, such as mochi and jewelry, further solidifying its role as a community hub. The rotating vendor slot will continue to offer new experiences for customers, ensuring a fresh and exciting selection of goods. Kamanaʻo hopes the community will continue to support the co-op and its collaborative efforts, as HI Cravings aims to bring back its 'OG' community feel while continuing to operate its three mobile trucks across Oʻahu.
Beyond the Headlines
The HI Cravings Co-Op model represents a micro-economic trend that could reshape local retail landscapes. In an era dominated by large corporations and online shopping, collaborative spaces like this offer a vital lifeline for small businesses, fostering a sense of community and local identity. This co-op approach not only mitigates the high costs associated with commercial leases but also encourages cross-promotion and shared customer bases, creating a more resilient local economy. It taps into a growing consumer desire for authentic, locally sourced products and unique shopping experiences. Furthermore, by providing a platform for rotating vendors and diverse merchandise, the co-op acts as an incubator for new businesses and a dynamic cultural hub, reflecting a broader shift towards sustainable, community-centric commerce that prioritizes collaboration over competition.
