What's Happening?
A recent report highlights that discarded electronic waste, such as old phones and laptops, contains significantly more gold per tonne than traditional gold ore. According to a 2019 report by the UN Environment Programme and the World Economic Forum,
a tonne of e-waste holds approximately 100 times more gold than a tonne of typical gold ore. This phenomenon, known as 'urban mining,' is becoming increasingly relevant as the global stockpile of unused electronics grows. Despite the potential, the industry is not yet equipped to process the vast amounts of e-waste efficiently. The report estimates that only 22% of global e-waste is formally collected and processed, leaving a significant portion unrecovered.

The implications of urban mining are substantial for both the environment and the economy. Recovering precious metals from e-waste could reduce the need for traditional mining, which is often environmentally damaging. Additionally, the value of metals in e-waste is estimated at billions of dollars, representing a significant economic opportunity. However, the current infrastructure for processing e-waste is insufficient, with most of it ending up in landfills or informal recycling operations that can cause environmental harm.
