What's Happening?
Crunchyroll, in partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, has acquired the global distribution rights for the next anime film by renowned director Makoto Shinkai. The film, whose title and plot details remain undisclosed, will be distributed worldwide
except in Asia, with India included in the Western territories. Shinkai is celebrated for his previous works like 'Your Name' and 'Weathering With You,' which have been major successes globally. This acquisition continues Crunchyroll's strategy of dominating the Western distribution of Japanese anime, following the successful release of Shinkai's 'Suzume.'
Why It's Important?
This acquisition underscores Crunchyroll's position as a leading distributor of Japanese anime in the Western market. By securing the rights to Shinkai's next film, Crunchyroll and Sony are poised to capitalize on the growing global interest in anime. Shinkai's films have historically performed well at the box office, and this new project is expected to attract significant attention from anime fans worldwide. The deal also highlights the increasing collaboration between Japanese creators and Western distributors, potentially leading to more cross-cultural projects and expanding the reach of anime.
