What's Happening?
Doage, a new strategic advisory and commercialization platform, has launched with the aim of fostering the growth of insurtech in Africa. The platform will support startups, insurers, investors, and technology companies in commercializing innovative insurance
solutions. Doage seeks to bridge the gap between promising technology and successful funding rounds, helping businesses achieve customer acquisition, distribution, and recurring revenue. The initiative will also collaborate with venture capital firms, development finance institutions, and accelerator programs to provide post-investment support to portfolio companies, ensuring that invested capital translates into measurable commercial outcomes. Founded by insurance executive Dominic Agesa Kavugwi, Doage focuses on building sustainable insurance businesses across the continent, generating revenue, facilitating market entry, and creating enterprise value. The platform also aims to establish an 'Africa-Global Insurtech Corridor' to connect African insurtechs with international partners and assist international companies in entering African markets through local partnerships and strategic advisory.
Why It's Important?
The launch of Doage is significant for the African insurtech ecosystem, which has seen over US$300 million in funding over the past five years but often struggles with commercialization. While capital and acceleration programs are prevalent, many promising ventures fail to secure live insurance contracts, integrate with partners, or achieve sufficient customer adoption. Doage addresses this critical 'commercialization gap' by providing expertise in go-to-market strategy, enterprise distribution, strategic partnerships, and market entry. This support is crucial for translating technological innovation into tangible business growth and sustainable revenue streams. By focusing on commercial execution, Doage aims to ensure that the substantial investments in African insurtech lead to the creation of durable businesses, increased insurance penetration, and greater enterprise value across the continent. The initiative also facilitates a two-way corridor, enabling both African insurtechs to access global markets and international players to navigate the diverse African landscape.
What's Next?
Doage is currently accepting inquiries from various stakeholders, including insurtech founders with early working products, insurers and distribution partners seeking technology or commercial collaborations, investors whose portfolio companies require commercial support, and international insurtech companies looking to enter African markets. The platform's Africa InsurTech Venture Lab is designed for early-stage ventures with existing products, customers, and some revenue, offering initial investments between US$40,000 and US$100,000. Doage will continue to help ventures prepare products for buyers, pursue contracts with large insurers and distributors, structure partnerships, and prepare for investor engagement. The success of Doage will be measured by the number of partnerships that achieve live distribution, the amount of premium or recurring technology revenue generated, the renewal and expansion of enterprise contracts, and the establishment of commercial operations in new markets by its portfolio companies. Each completed transaction will provide operating evidence for Doage's proposition.
Beyond the Headlines
The establishment of Doage highlights a broader challenge within the global startup ecosystem: the transition from innovation and funding to sustainable commercial success. While accelerators and venture capital are adept at identifying and nurturing promising technologies, the complex process of commercialization—involving regulatory compliance, distribution networks, customer trust, and operational integration—often remains a significant hurdle. Doage's focus on this 'commercial layer' underscores the idea that technology alone is insufficient; insurance, in particular, remains a trust-based business requiring robust commercial relationships. The initiative also emphasizes the importance of localized strategies in diverse markets like Africa, where regulatory, distribution, payment, and consumer behaviors vary significantly by country. By building a bridge between product development and market scale, Doage aims to foster a more mature and impactful insurtech sector, ultimately contributing to increased financial inclusion and economic development across Africa.
