What's Happening?
James Beard Award-winning chef Kevin Nashan has opened a new restaurant, The Clydesdale, at Ballpark Village in St. Louis. The restaurant, located on the ground floor of the Budweiser Brew House building, officially opened to the public on August 27,
following a private cocktail reception. Nashan partnered with Live! Hospitality & Entertainment for this venture, aiming to create a polished yet approachable modern tavern concept. The menu features a strong seafood program, including oysters, smoked trout, caviar, and a jumbo shrimp cocktail, with some signature items recognizable from Nashan's other establishment, Peacemaker Lobster & Crab Co. Beyond seafood, appetizers range from house-made sausages to P.E.I. mussels, and entrees include Wagyu burgers, fresh pastas, and prime sirloin steak frites. The Clydesdale seeks to attract both baseball fans and locals, offering a diverse dining experience in a space designed to be more restaurant-like than a traditional sports bar.
Why It's Important?
The opening of The Clydesdale by a renowned chef like Kevin Nashan signifies a significant upgrade to the culinary landscape of Ballpark Village and downtown St. Louis. This move aims to broaden the appeal of the area beyond just baseball game days, transforming it into a year-round dining destination. For the local economy, it represents an investment in hospitality and tourism, potentially drawing more visitors and residents to the district. Nashan's reputation, including his 2017 James Beard Award, lends credibility and prestige to the new establishment, setting a higher standard for dining options in the area. The restaurant's concept, balancing upscale offerings with approachability, caters to a wide demographic, from casual diners to those seeking a more refined experience. This development could inspire further culinary innovation and investment in St. Louis's urban core, enhancing its reputation as a vibrant food city.
What's Next?
The Clydesdale is expected to become a key attraction at Ballpark Village, with its stadium-facing patio and indoor-outdoor bar anticipated to be major draws. Nashan's team will eventually operate all three levels of the building, including the existing Crown Room event space and Rooftop Bud Deck, which will offer house-made brats and sausages for the 2027 baseball season. The restaurant's success will be closely watched as a model for how high-caliber culinary establishments can thrive in entertainment districts. Its ability to attract a diverse clientele, beyond just event-goers, will be crucial for its long-term viability. The ongoing evolution of Ballpark Village, with new businesses and attractions, suggests a continued effort to create a dynamic urban environment, and The Clydesdale is positioned to play a central role in this transformation. Future plans may include further menu expansions or special events to engage the community.
Beyond the Headlines
The venture of a celebrated chef like Kevin Nashan into a commercial entertainment complex like Ballpark Village highlights a growing trend where high-end culinary talent is increasingly integrated into broader urban development projects. This move reflects a recognition that quality dining experiences are essential components of vibrant public spaces, attracting diverse audiences and enhancing overall appeal. The challenge for The Clydesdale will be to maintain its culinary integrity and unique identity within a potentially high-volume, event-driven environment. Nashan's philosophy, emphasizing hospitality and making people 'feel' good, suggests an attempt to infuse a personal touch into a larger commercial setting. This project could serve as a case study for how chefs can balance artistic vision with commercial demands, contributing to the cultural and economic enrichment of urban centers while expanding their brand reach.
